Last month, Surrey Homelessness & Housing Society had the great honour of recognizing our 2021 Community Leader Award recipients during a live-streamed City Council meeting at Surrey City Hall!
Every year, SHHS acknowledges impactful members of our community working to help those most vulnerable. In 2021, our Community Leaders were Cody Jacques and the grade 6/7 students in Kirkbride Elementary School’s SCORES afterschool program (click here to watch a short video about their accomplishments).
The ceremony began with a few words from SHHS’s Program Manager, Letizia Romei, about the work of the organization over the last year. The first award was then presented to recipient Cody Jacques.
Next, we recognized the Kirkbride Elementary students, several of which were present at City Hall to accept on behalf of their entire cohort, as well as the SCORES Program Coordinator. It was a special moment when Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum had each student briefly introduce themselves into the microphone, after which they received their plaque.
Finally, SHHS Board President, Councillor Laurie Guerra, said a few words to acknowledge and thank our Community Leaders for their contributions. SHHS is thrilled to be able to highlight the important work of our two awards recipients and we thank the City of Surrey for their support and the opportunity to hold this event at City Hall!
