On Thursday, November 3rd, over 90 guests consisting of family members, friends, donors and supporters gathered at The Escape Room at Elements Casino in Cloverdale to honor the late Bill Reid and to celebrate the many individuals and organizations who are making the Bill Reid Memorial Shelter a reality. Affectionately referred to as “Mr. Cloverdale” or “Mr. Surrey” Mr. Reid was a champion of the homeless and worked tirelessly to remove barriers and connect people back to their communities. The new purpose-built shelter, named in Bill’s honor, will provide sixteen shelter beds and twelve studio transition housing units and will be a pet friendly facility situated on a 26 acre farm site.
We were pleased to welcome many members of the Reid family and to hear from one of Bill’s daughters, Cathy, who gave a beautiful tribute to her late Father and thanked everyone for their support and dedication to this project. A highlight from the evening was a cheque presentation where the Surrey Firefighter’s Charitable Foundation, with support from the Office of the Mayor and Elements Casino, presented a cheque to the shelter operator Options Community Services, bringing us even closer to reaching our fundraising goals! It is because of generous donations like this over the years that the shelter is being made possible – a shelter that will help our most vulnerable individuals feel safe and get the support needed to reclaim their lives.
A special thanks to Elements Casino for their incredible support of the event – we could not have done this event without them!
Stay tuned for updates on when we break ground!
