Coldest Night of the Year is back! Hosted by Surrey Road to Home Society, the annual Coldest Night of the Year Surrey Whalley event will take place on Saturday February 26th, 2022.

CNOY is a family-friendly walk that raises money for local charities serving people experiencing hurt, hunger and homelessness in the Surrey-Whalley community. You can choose to walk the 2km or 5km route in-person, both beginning and ending at Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre in Surrey – or you can participate fully virtually by walking any day in February on a route of your choosing. Start a team of walkers, join an existing team or walk independently. The event is free to join and open to participants of all ages, from toddlers to active seniors. There will be a rest stop on the 5km route giving out snacks and drinks, and those who raise over $150 (or $75 for youth under 18) will also receive a 2022 CNOY toque as a thank you!

The idea behind Coldest Night of the Year is that by walking in the cold, you’ll feel a hint of the challenge faced by those experiencing homelessness during winter. By fundraising, you’ll be contributing much-needed money to charities in Surrey-Whalley that are bringing hope and help to people in our community that need support.

This year, Surrey Road to Home Society hopes to beat last year’s record and raise at least $25,000. All funds raised will go to supporting projects of the Surrey Road to Home Society, a coalition of community organizations working together to reduce and prevent homelessness in Surrey with a vision that everyone in Surrey is appropriately housed.

“Coldest Night of the Year is an opportunity to walk in solidarity with neighbours across Canada on the same day and same time to highlight the challenges of poverty and homelessness,” says Jonquil Hallgate, Chair of Surrey Road to Home Society.

“Many thousands of folks in all communities in our country face and/or experience homelessness at some point in time. For some, homelessness is a way of life and the funds raised in our Surrey community on Saturday February 26th will go to provide money for a variety of initiatives at grassroot levels. Join us in a fabulous community event that makes a difference here at home.”

Surrey Homelessness & Housing Society is pleased to participate and provide fiduciary support for Surrey Road to Home Society’s CNOY Surrey-Whalley event.
